Four thinking styles that help managers navigate the entrepreneurial journey toward innovation

About Kinetic Thinking

Different ways of thinking involve distinct interplays of perception and action. No two people perceive things or act in the same way. What to look for (see) and what to do (act) are implicit commitments regulated by thinking and honed into embedded habits and routines by an individual´s life experiences. Kinetic Thinking is the capacity of a manager to move intentionally among different thinking styles based on the stage and circumstances of their initiatives. It attunes the manager to marketplace dynamics, opens up their perception of opportunities, and expands their range of actions.

Entrepreneurial Style Assessment

To raise awareness of how managers’ think in entrepreneurial situations, we have developed a simple assessment (a “mirror”) and an intuitive map of different thinking styles. The mirror makes current thinking habits explicit while the map highlights blind spots — and thus the directions in which managers can develop to become more versatile thinkers. The Entrepreneurial Style Assessment© measures how individuals engage with entrepreneurial situations. It is now available for use with individuals, groups, and entire organizations to help build a deeper understanding of both existing ways of thinking and how anyone can develop a range of entrepreneurial styles to deploy depending on the challenge at hand.

Educational Services

Entrepreneurial capabilities are widely recognized as an important catalyst for innovation, and their development is vital to sustaining competitiveness in organizations large and small, public and private. We aim to provide educational experiences for managers to develop as kinetic thinkers — to move intentionally among four styles of thinking when facing entrepreneurial situations— and thus to facilitate pathways for personal and professional development. Currently, a manager´s toolkit, educator teaching materials, and a facilitator certification process are under development as steps toward building a community of practice that can enrich the deployment of entrepreneurial thinking experiences for any manager.

Research & Publishing

Kinetic Thinking and the Entrepreneurial Styles© framework, model, and assessment tool have emerged from a collaborative effort of a team of experienced scholars and educators. They have consolidated their respective years of teaching, research, and development work with entrepreneurs and executives into a new theory and practice framework. The team has established a stream of research and developed a practice framework that focuses on entrepreneurial thinking and action and includes academic articles, research reports, and a white paper/podcast series.
